You may have heard that the North Edinburgh News is facing closure in March. The paper, which has been running for more than thirty years, expects to lose it’s core Fairer Scotland funding. It’s three members of staff have already received their redundancy notices.
But neither the editor, Mary Burnside, or the staff have given up hope. They are still looking at ways to keep this important community voice alive – and trying to persuade the council and potential funders that this is a valuable and necessary resource for this part of the city.
Edinbuzz is currently helping the NEN get up to speed with social media tools. The NEN now has a twitter stream, and we’ll soon be unveiling it’s new blog. There’s also a new Facebook campaign supporting the paper.
We plan to launch the blog next week – but first, we want your help. If you’re an artist or a graphic designer, we want you to come up with a masthead for the new NEN blog.
The basic idea is to create a silhouette of the North Edinburgh skyline, from Granton to the edge of Silverknowes, in the NEN’s colours. You can see a very rough mock-up at the top of this article… but I’m no artist, and we hope you can come up with something much more exciting.
We’ve already used twitter to ask which buildings people think should appear in the masthead. The Granton Lighthouse, the Granton Gas Tower, and the Muirhouse Highrises are the most popular suggestions.
All of the images we receive will be published as part of a slideshow on the day we launch the blog – and the best will become part of the offical masthead, with credit to the artist and a link to their artwork online.
Please send your masthead designs to email@example.com as .jpeg files. The deadline for submissions is 11am, Wednesday the 9th of February. Good luck!
